What is a “Screw Machine”?

The term “screw machine” is a bit misleading when describing the full functionality of the machine. Although the machine does have threading capabilities (as seen in screws) majority of the components produced on a screw machine are not screws. In fact, majority of the components made on a screw machine are custom made to print specifications often leading to complex geometrically shaped components. There are many different types of screw machines in use (Swiss, turret, automatic cam, and CNC) to best fit a specific design, but in its simplest form a screw machine, universally, is an automatic lathe type of machine. All screw machines are fully automated, whether mechanically (via cams) or by CNC (computerized control), which means that once they are set up to run, they continue to produce parts with very little human intervention. The term “Screw Machine” was incorporated within the 18^th century for Swiss watch makers referring to any machine cutting screws. As technology progressed the term “Screw Machine” expanded and today many companies use either a mechanical screw machines (cam driven) or CNC screw machines (Computerized) for their given projects.
